Step 4: Drive Traffic To Your Facebook Page

Okay, now that you’ve got everything set up for your email list and your opt-in page, it’s time to start getting people to visit your site and sign up for your email list.

There are two ways I do this.  The first way takes money, the second way is free.  I’ll leave it to you which method you’ll want to try, but I will say that if you have a bit of money to invest, the paid method will give you the quickest results.  However, if you’re a Facebook junkie and know how to use social networks better than a teenage girl, then the free method might be more profitable to you.

Traffic Method 1:  Facebook Ads

My preferred method for building my list is to buy Ads using Facebook’s Ad Platform, and send people directly to my opt in page on my Fan Page.  The benefit of this method is that Facebook loves it when people buy ads to promote other pages on Facebook, so you’ll be easily approved in their Ad Network.

The second advantage is that you’re able to get VERY SPECIFIC about the type of people your ad can target.  So if you know that the customers in your niche tend to be women, age 21-35, who own dogs, then you can target just those people to see your ads!  This means you can build a highly targeted email list very easily.

The third advantage is that if you’re smart about how you use the Facebook Ad Network, you can get lots of traffic very cheaply.  Cheaper than using other ad platforms.

When using Facebook Ads, you set your own budget.  So let’s say you’re only willing to invest $100 a month on traffic.  That’s all you need to spend!  And if you want to invest $10,000 a month, you can spend that as well.  (Though, hopefully you’ll only be spending that much if you’re making double that in revenue!)

Important Note:  If you’re buying traffic, send people DIRECTLY to your email opt in form.  Not your Fan Page home!  Most people who go to the home page of your Fan Page won’t notice your newsletter widget, so you only want to send traffic directly to the static page.

Traffic Method 2:  Social Networking

Okay, so if you don’t have the money to do Traffic Method 1, or you want to do do something in addition to it, here is how you can get traffic to your email list for free.

Basically, all you do is social network.

  • If you’re in love with Twitter, you send out tweets to people asking them to check out your Facebook page and subscribe to your list.
  • If you love using Facebook, join groups and tell your friends to check out your Fan Page and subscribe to your newsletter.
  • Go on other Fan Pages on Facebook that are similar to yours and participate, getting the people on those pages to visit yours.
  • Put links to your newsletter opt in page in the signature of your personal email and forum profiles if you post on any forums.
  • Comment on blogs and include links to your Facebook Page with the opt in form on it.

These are all free methods of generating traffic to your page, however, they can be slow and time consuming.  If that doesn’t bother you, go for it!  It will take longer to build your email list, but it will also be free.

Alternative Method:  Using Your Fan Page As An Email List

If you’re having a hard time getting people to subscribe to your email list, an alternative method is to get people to Like your fan page, then send out updates to their streams to get them to subscribe to your email list.

Some people prefer to build up a huge fan base on their pages, and then market directly to the Facebook users in their streams.  This is certainly an option if you want to go that route, but I find getting subscribers to your email list is more effective in the long run, and here’s why…

First, most Facebookers do not like being marketed to on Facebook, however, these same people are perfectly willing to be marketed to in their email.  I don’t know why this is, but it’s a phenomenon that can’t be ignored.

Second, email offers are more effective than offers that go out into people’s Facebook streams.  This is because most people get so many updates to their streams, your offers can get lost quick, whereas most people will comb through each email they get.

But if you’re having a hard time getting newsletter sign ups, collecting Fans who like your Fan Page and then funneling them towards your newsletter is a good alternative.

Alternative Method:  Buying Promotion on

In case you’re unfamiliar with, it’s a website that allows people to sell services for no more than $5.  So you can get some great deals on this website, but it’s also incredible for using when it comes to social networks.

You can go to Fiverr and buy promotions for $5 that will increase the number of people who subscribe to your fan page.  You can also buy Twitter blasts, Email blasts, pretty much anything you can think of, all for just $5 a pop!

Fiverr is a great alternative to help you grow your Facebook traffic and get more people subscribing to your email list.  Here’s a video that shows how one guy used Fiverr to grow his Fan Page subscribers from 300 to over 3,000:
